British Royal Automobile Club honours drivetrain of Mercedes-AMG ONE
Great honour for the Mercedes-AMG ONE (weighted fuel consumption, combined: 8.7 l/100 km; weighted CO₂ emissions, combined: 198 g/km; weighted power consumption, combined: 32 kWh/100 km)[1]: the British Royal Automobile Club’s Dewar Trophy has been awarded to Mercedes‑AMG High Performance Powertrains for the E PERFORMANCE drivetrain of the two-seater Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar. The Formula 1™ derived Power Unit delivers a total of 782 kW (1,063 hp) with a 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine, liquid cooled battery, four electric motors and power electronics. With this award, the Royal Automobile Club recognizes the successful development and implementation of the Formula 1™ Power Unit in the street-legal hypercar. A top-class expert jury has been awarding the Dewar Trophy since 1957 in recognition of outstanding technical achievement in the automotive sector.

“The Mercedes-AMG ONE is the most ambitious project we have ever undertaken: The hypercar brings for the first time Formula 1™ hybrid technology almost one-to-one from the racetrack to the road. The teams from Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth are delighted to receive the Dewar Trophy, because they have achieved great things together. The expert commission also recognized the close teamwork that made the AMG-ONE possible in the first place. This applies equally to both development and production. It has been a massive challenge to protect the Power Unit’s Formula 1™ DNA and make it road legal, but one that we fully embraced and met head-on with great teamwork and unwavering support from Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Benz. We’re immensely excited and proud to have made it a reality,” says Adam Allsopp, Advanced Technology Director of Mercedes‑AMG High Performance Powertrains.
It is the third occasion on which Mercedes-Benz has been presented with the Trophy, having previously won it in 2009 for its Formula One Kinetic Energy Recovery System and in 2014 for its World Championship-winning PU106A hybrid Power Unit.
Mercedes-AMG HPP manufactures the complete hybrid drivetrain for the Mercedes-AMG ONE at its Brixworth site. It consists of the 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine, the high-voltage battery, the four electric machines and the power electronics. Before the drive elements are delivered to Coventry for installation in the vehicle, they undergo an extensive pass-off on the Brixworth test benches to ensure they exactly meet the performance specifications. The tests are carried out using exactly the same procedures as used for our Formula 1™ Power Units.
The unique hypercar fascinates not only with its E PERFORMANCE Formula 1™ hybrid drive, but also with other motorsport technology. This ranges from the carbon monocoque and the carbon body, to the load‑bearing engine/transmission unit and active aerodynamics, to the push-rod chassis. With its complex technology, the Mercedes-AMG ONE sometimes offers even more than a Formula 1 racecar. It has the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with hybrid-driven rear axle and electrically-driven front axle with torque vectoring. It can also drive purely electrically.
