British Royal Automobile Club honours drivetrain of Mercedes-AMG ONE
“The Mercedes-AMG ONE is the most ambitious project we have ever undertaken: The hypercar brings for the first time Formula 1™ hybrid technology almost one-to-one from the racetrack to the road. “Receiving the Royal Automobile Club’s Dewar Trophy is a tremendous honour for everyone involved in developing and producing the Mercedes-AMG ONE. It has been a massive challenge to protect the Power Unit’s Formula 1™ DNA and make it road legal, but one that we fully embraced and met head-on with great teamwork and unwavering support from Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Benz. We’re immensely excited and proud to have made it a reality,” says Adam Allsopp, Advanced Technology Director of Mercedes‑AMG High Performance Powertrains.
It is the third occasion on which Mercedes-Benz has been presented with the Trophy, having previously won it in 2009 for its Formula One Kinetic Energy Recovery System and in 2014 for its World Championship-winning PU106A hybrid Power Unit.
Mercedes-AMG HPP manufactures the complete hybrid drivetrain for the Mercedes-AMG ONE at its Brixworth site. It consists of the 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine, the high-voltage battery, the four electric machines and the power electronics. Before the drive elements are delivered to Coventry for installation in the vehicle, they undergo an extensive pass-off on the Brixworth test benches to ensure they exactly meet the performance specifications. The tests are carried out using exactly the same procedures as used for our Formula 1™ Power Units.
The unique hypercar fascinates not only with its E PERFORMANCE Formula 1™ hybrid drive, but also with other motorsport technology. This ranges from the carbon monocoque and the carbon body, to the load‑bearing engine/transmission unit and active aerodynamics, to the push-rod chassis. With its complex technology, the Mercedes-AMG ONE sometimes offers even more than a Formula 1 racecar. It has the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with hybrid-driven rear axle and electrically-driven front axle with torque vectoring. It can also drive purely electrically.
